ABSTRACT

In discussion of universals the following arguments have been used in favour of what would be commonly called moderate realism. First, the fact of recurrences—recurring qualities, relations, substances—has been held to imply universals in rebus. Secondly, it is urged that the nominalist, unless he is a very extreme one, must base his theory on the fact of resemblance. Thirdly, it is said that ability to think of “open classes” implies universals. So far have only considered one case of resemblance, and that a very special one, resemblance between two identically coloured objects. To summarise the elements in George Berkeley’s account that have considered: he asserts the following propositions. A general name, for example, “triangle,” stands for all triangles indifferently. The general name must be kept constantly to its definition.
