ABSTRACT

The new system would take nurses from moderate users of health information technology (HIT) to heavy users. Middle’s chief medical informatics officer position was vacant, so the HIT project came under the direction of the chief information officer. He was aware of two common recommendations of those who have implemented computerized provider order entry (CPOE): “Make CPOE use mandatory”, and “Implement CPOE throughout the enterprise.” Middle had steady improvements in automation of many business and clinical processes, and then entered another phase, the “clinician high impact” phase of HIT. They would acquire and implement new modules of their main vendor’s electronic health record in their inpatient settings: CPOE, bar code medication administration, advanced nursing documentation, and then physician clinical documentation. CPOE was the first module in the “clinician high impact” phase to be implemented. The CPOE planning team also decided on a pilot approach. Several of the key players on the CPOE team took vacations.
