ABSTRACT

Christianity and Hinduism are two of the world’s greatest living religions, and it is of the utmost importance that they should be compared in every possible detail so that through such comparisons Christians and Hindus may understand better each other’s, and their own, heritage. For one would expect that the centuries of contact between the Christian and Hindu worlds that was brought about by the colonization of India should have made mutual understanding near perfect. The general attitude of Christians to Hinduism has been either one of hasty dismissal of it as incomprehensible or else one of benevolent indifference. The problem of the relationship between ethics and religion, or between morals and religion, has occupied for some time an important place in the discourses of philosophers. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
