ABSTRACT

The first few days of class establish the class norms for students. Even experienced teachers may feel a bit nervous on the first day of class, especially if they are teaching a new course or if they are teaching a course somewhat outside their area of expertise. The technology in a classroom can range from nonexistent to a fully integrated computer projection system with multiple inputs, controls, and outputs. Almost all LMS systems make it easy to send e-mail messages to the class or post announcements. Full-time students typically take four to five classes in a semester, and for each one they have to figure out the preferences, expectations, and teaching style of the instructor. While waiting for class to begin, greet and make small talk with students as they arrive. Six qualities have been identified as essential in establishing a sense of community in the classroom. They are connection, participation, safety, support, belonging, and empowerment.
