ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the contemporary dynamics of US imperialism in Latin America in the current context of what we might describe as the new geopolitics of capital: the projection of imperial state power by the US government to advance the ‘national interest’, which is to say, the economic interests of capital and the ruling class. The chapter traces out the changing face and diverse forms taken by both US imperialism and the anti-imperialist movement in the current political context. The main focus of the chapter is on the machinations of the US government, currently under the presidency and administration of Donald Trump, in regard to Venezuela, the primary object and target of US imperialism in the current context.
