ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 provides an overview of the key literature on migration and transnationalism with the inclusion of relevant scholars who have discussed transnationalism from a theoretical perspective. Transnational theories are discussed within the migration theoretical debate to understand the impact of the new policies and the evolution of transnationalism as an economic and political phenomenon with the implementation of transnational policies. In particular, this chapter analyses the impact of transnational politics in current times. It also discusses transnational politics and the related practices from an empirical perspective. In particular, this chapter introduces the external voting and dual citizenship policies, and it discusses the relevance of them in the modern world. It also provides an overview of dual citizenship practices, the evolution of these policies, nation-states’ acceptance of these practices, and the consequences in extending citizenship rights outside the national borders in the era of globalisation.
