ABSTRACT

n a manner of speaking, complexity of object requires simplicity of action; finding ways to deal with complex linguistic objects is often a goal in applied linguistics. However, for some, simplicity and dynamism get confounded with superficiality and lack of scientific rigor, and that is not the best way to move a field forward. Especially when it comes to multilingual settings, and people increasingly study those since in many ways they are the norm rather than the exception, an observation of the strategies and resources that users of language make to achieve successful communication is paramount. In that regard, applied linguistics in the world starts with a sense of curiosity toward a phenomenon, and a wonderment, which is then addressed, taking into consideration what the applied linguist has come to know about the nature and dynamics of languages in context.
