ABSTRACT

Psychological support has become a pressing issue in healthcare. The system has been overwhelmed by the need for psychological assistance from all over the world, ranging from the victims of mass shootings to soldiers returning from wars. The traditional support systems for psychological issues are social workers, pastors, family members and friends. In Europe, patients receive support from the health insurance and the social system, thus leaving only minimal expenses for the family. Suicide is a serious public health problem. The fact is that deaths are preventable with timely interventions. Mental health professionals should be consulted such as psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and master’s-level therapists. Most severe cases of depression respond to antidepressant medications. Other types of mood disorders require specific treatments and drugs such as bipolar or schizophrenia. The cognitive and behavioral approach, group therapy, is useful in treating depressive symptoms and raising insights about the self and the relationships with others.
