ABSTRACT

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is the most dangerous part in the hospital for patients. The ICU is also the most overlooked part of the hospital when it comes to patients’ desires. Only the medical profession that has the right to determine what is good, fair, serious, critical, and not known in the ICU. This is why when given greater authority to make decisions, nurses in the ICU have increased intrinsic motivation. For nurses, the work in the ICU is also more challenging. The needs of patients continue to change and often must be recognized by the nurses themselves because the patient is unable to communicate them or is in an unstable condition. Numerous Lean implementation studies have been done in the intensive care unit—either a specialist unit or a unit based on the severity level—and they have shown good promise.
