ABSTRACT

This final practice-based section aims to familiarize readers with the basics of Interactive Data Extraction and Analysis (IDEA) software as one of the audit Computer-Assisted Audit Tools and Techniques (CAATT). The chapter is organized into three main sections:

Data Import: This first phase is a very important one as the auditor cannot perform a CAATT-based audit test if he/she is unable to successfully import the data into the software. In this section, readers are provided with three common data import scenarios: importing data in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and text data.

Audit Procedures: A step-by-step tutorial covering ten common audit tests organized by fraud scheme category are presented. These tests are basic in nature and are intended to provide audit or fraud professionals with no or little CAATT experience with some audit test practice opportunities. The IDEA software includes some basic dummy (test) data to accommodate practice opportunities. However, the reader may want to use his/her organizational test/training data for some or all of these tests.

Report Creation: This last section deals with output (report) creation phase of an audit test.
