ABSTRACT
This chapter begins with the proposition that artifacts constitute the very “stuff” of all creative phenomena: their productions are what drives the creative tradition. Without artifacts there is no creativity. The chapter goes on to discuss in some detail the ontological nature of artifacts and their distinction from natural things, and the role that intention plays in identifying the artifactual nature of things in the world. A fairly comprehensive taxonomy of artifacts is established and discussed.
