ABSTRACT
The Iliad of Homer, the songs of David, the odes of Pindar, the tragedies of Aeschylus, the Doric temples, the Gothic cathedrals, the plays of Shakespeare were all made, not for sport, but in grave earnest, in tears, and smiles of suffering and loving men. There had been sporadic appearances of “Gothick” during the eighteenth century, not very accurate in detail. The church which primarily affected the shift to Gothic was Richard Upjohn’s Trinity Church, New York, 1839–1846. Indeed, his rise to prominence among church architects was such that by the mid-1840s, he received many requests annually for designs for churches or chapels in regions far from his New York office. Woman’s profession embraces the care and nursing of the body in the critical periods of infancy and sickness, the training of the human mind in the most impressible period of childhood, the instruction and control of servants, and most of the government and economies of the family state.
