ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes why Europe should to continue to remain the primary region of strategic importance to the United States (US). It examines the economic importance of Western Europe to the US in comparison to other regions; Europe’s geostrategic importance; and current and future American ancestral, cultural and historical ties to Western Europe. The economic importance of Europe, in comparison to other regions of the world, is also reflected in the level of US direct investments in European nations and vice versa as compared to Asia. The US tends to believe that efforts to raise the standard of living and develop the economies of Third World countries contribute to international peace and stability-objectives consistent with our world order interests. Cultural heritage and ancestral roots will not ensure a US military and political commitment to Europe. But, they will play some role in determining American attitudes toward Europe.
