ABSTRACT

Conflict in South Africa is often conceptualised as a head-on collision between 'black' and 'white' political interests. This chapter looks at a further diversity or actors - Inkatha, the Labour Party, the Progressive Federal Party and business. There is a recognition of the need for many different actors and approaches to try to 'normalise' South Africa from whatever base they can. The chapter describes the four actors, who they are, what their vision of the future is, and what strategies they have for getting there. It explores some strategic questions for incrementalists in general and for each actor individually. A multiplicity of industry-specific bodies exist, amongst the most significant of which are the Chamber of Mines, the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa, the Building Industries Federation of South Africa and the South African Agricultural Union. The initial purpose of the Urban Foundation was to engage in project work to improve the urban environment of black South Africans.
