ABSTRACT

The use of a theory of science is obviously not related to the question of how to conduct science but rather to problems of how to talk about science. It responds to the kinds of uneasiness practitioners or the general public feel about science. When considering the Kantian philosophy of science, it becomes necessary to correct one possible misunderstanding in talking about the "uneasiness," "problems," and "trouble" with science as a source of theorizing about science. Science is a collective production of knowledge. This production is performed intentionally and in accordance with rules. As a type of knowledge, science is impersonal, that is detached from the person doing science. The individual is not the vehicle of science but, rather, a contributor to or a participant in science. In consequence, a theory of science must be conceived in such a way that it can function as part of a larger theory of society.
