ABSTRACT

The potato is the most important vegetable crop, and world production in 1979 was over 250 million metric tons. Potatoes are grown in all continents and serve as food for humans, feed for livestock and are important industrial sources of starch and alcohol. Most potato production is in Europe and the Soviet Union, which combined account for over 80% of the world production. The potato is principally a cool-weather crop, but it cannot withstand frost. Potatoes can be grown on various soil types, but it is essential that the soil is sufficiently retentive of moisture, well drained, well aerated and of good structure. Potatoes require a well-aerated soil, it is essential that they fit into a cropping system that favors good soil structure. Potatoes can tolerate a wide range of soil reaction, from pH 5-8 or higher. The great differences in potato yields in the various continents and areas are due to climate, seed stock, diseases, insects and fertilization.
