ABSTRACT

Sweet potato ranks seventh in world crop statistics after wheat, rice, maize, potato, and cassava and ranks twelfth in dry matter production and fifth in harvested weight in the world when compared to the 20 major foods. Sweet potato roots alone or mixed with other feeds are favorable feeds compared to corn and are used for dairy, beef, goat, sheep, pigs, and poultry. Sweet potato is important in the tropics, subtropics and parts of the temperate zone. Sweet potato is grown under intensive farming, subsistence farming and dual purpose production for both foliage and storage roots. Fertilizer is not always affordable or available to small farmers. Sweet potato is considered as a staple "survival" or "poor man's" food where high sweet potato consumption has been associated with war or famine. Yield and quality of sweet potato foliage are important where foliage is used as greens for human consumption.
