ABSTRACT

Mango (Mangiferaindica), a relative of cashew and pistachio nuts, is perhaps the most popular fruit in the sub-humid tropics and subtropics. A native of the Indo-Burma region, mango has been grown for thousands of years in India and neighboring countries. It has spread worldwide in the tropics and subtropics and is esteemed for its delicious colorful fruit. Mango is an evergreen tree that may become very large with age. Seedling trees can be enormous, but grafted or budded trees are usually smaller. The trees have a distinctive dense growth habit and are usually broad and round-topped or oval in shape. Mango grows best in areas where rainy periods coincide with vegetative growth and dry conditions prevail during flowering and fruiting. The tree will grow vigorously and become quite large in the humid tropics, but fruit production will usually be very infrequent and unsatisfactory because of the wet conditions during the reproductive period.
