ABSTRACT

Rangeland fits any- modern conceptualization of an ecosystem: an arbitrarily delineated area having interacting physical and biological components to which social, cultural, economic, institutional, and political components must be added. Units of rangeland can be units of landscape where human activities take place, units of production, habitat for a great variety of wildlife, and ecosystems connected too many other ecosystems. Ranchers and other resource managers must visualize and manage their unit as a total system and should not become preoccupied with one component. The sustainable use and management of the rangeland resources in developing countries will require that a more holistic approach be taken during project planning, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring. Only have social scientists been involved in agricultural development projects. Good range management must view each management unit as a system having interrelated parts and utilize basic principles from many disciplines including ecology, economics, political science, and sociology.
