ABSTRACT

Angora goat production has been an important industry in Texas since shortly after the type of goat was introduced in 1849. Numbers of Angora goats in Texas have fluctuated widely over the years because of highly variable mohair prices and the influence of this variability on the demand for replacement animals. Most of the Angora goats in Texas are on the Edwards Plateau where the industry began. Low reproductive performance is a major problem for the Angora goat industry throughout Texas. While the reproduction rate of the flock has the greatest impact on the potential net return for the Angora goat, enterprise, the pounds of mohair produced annually per head are very important. A new mohair marketing and grading service is being offered to producers that should make Texas mohair more competitive on the world market. Improvement in both mohair production and reproductive rate can be achieved and maintained through selective breeding programs and good flock management.
