ABSTRACT

Two Hereford bulls from the DeBerard Ranch in Kreramling, Colorado, were purchased for the establishment of the famous Line One Herefords. Type studies conducted in the early 1950s, and the new crossbreeding studies documenting input and output relationships, show that pounds of production relative to cows exposed to bulls may not be the best index of total efficiency of feed use. The commercial cattle producer can easily find the high-gaining, muscular, large-frame breeds of bulls for terminal-sire crossbreeding at central performance tests. In the selection of bulls for the yearling heifers, the easy way is to go either to the Jersey or the Longhorn, except that the Jersey calf seems to have a lower survivability. The pulmonary arterial pressure test of bulls already can help reduce susceptibility to high mountain disease or brisket disease.
