ABSTRACT

The powers Moscow calls "imperialist" have released from colonialism two dozen countries in Africa, some of them at too precipitate a speed. Nikita Khrushchev, told the United Nations Assembly on September 23, 1960, one day after it had admitted thirteen new nations recently freed by the Western powers, that Moscow has no colonies. The state monopoly trading apparatus which permits the Moscow regime to move quickly into a new market permits it to withdraw just as quickly. In December, 1958, Moscow decided to bring pressure on Finland to oust several of the most independent political figures from the Finnish government. The squeeze can be put on again whenever Moscow wishes and, given the geographical and trade position of Finland, it is hard to see how that brave little country can extricate itself from the bear hug. Moscow suffered some losses too during the breaking off of trade with Finland.
