ABSTRACT

The vocabulary of newspeak and the "researches" and "documentation" of Soviet historians must be employed to make each of these look like its opposite, and to envelop the whole concept of America in hatred. The history of the Balkans and other "People's Democracies" is also being rewritten in the Soviet Historical Section of the Academy of Sciences, and particularly in the Slavic Studies Section. The Soviet civil war must be rewritten as if there never had been a war commissar named Leon Trotsky. From the beginning of the 1930s, Joseph Stalin policies determined with steadily increasing rigor and detail the character of Soviet historiography. The war ended with the Soviet Union as the only great power astride the Eurasian land mass, with a power vacuum to the west and a power vacuum to the east of it. The United States represented the only possible obstacle to the rapid expansion of the Soviet Empire into both vacuums.
