ABSTRACT

The joint earth sciences program, because of its late date of inception, never advanced beyond the basic negotiation stage. The United States (US)-U.S.S.R. Joint Study Group on Earth Sciences was established by the Joint Commission in February 1979. The study group was charged with exploring the possibilities for cooperation in this area and identifying specific topics in which cooperation might be mutually beneficial. Soviet demonstrated research strengths from which the US could potentially benefit in the area of ore forming processes included the following. Structural details of ore deposits in various metallogenic provinces; studies of skarn deposits; trace element distribution patterns in ore deposit areas; studies of iron and manganese deposits; studies of ferro-alloy deposits, such as chromium; and platinum deposits. It was thought that the U.S.S.R. could benefit from US work on implications of plate tectonics, studies of lead-zinc deposits and porphyry copper studies.
