ABSTRACT

The United States (US)-the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R) Joint Working Group in Microbiology was established in 1972 as one of the six initial programs of exchange under the Science and Technology Agreement. The program was administered by the American Society for Microbiology for the US and by U.S.S.R. Ministry of the Microbiology Industry for the Soviet Union. Most of the activities of the microbiology program consisted of joint conferences and seminars. In February 1979, the projects on production of proteins by microbial means and on microbial technology, because of their common interests, were merged into one project entitled "fundamentals of microbiological processes." The combined project focused on the fundamentals of research on microbiology and biochemical engineering. In a 1980 survey of participants in the microbiology program, the questionnaire responses regarding scientific benefits that had been derived were relatively inconclusive, with perhaps a slightly negative impression when considered as a whole.
