ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that some methodological approaches for anthropological work on microlevel/macrolevel relationships. It discusses the necessity of paying greater attention to the rubrics of linkage, the rules for studying and demonstrating articulation of different levels in terms of space, time and causality. Growing interest in the study of microlevel/macrolevel linkages calls for the development of suitable methodologies to guide empirical research. Micro/macro relationships may be involved primarily with the spatial dimension, chronological progression, and causality in hierarchical systems, or combinations among these three spheres. The conceptual language of micro/macro linkage, particularly farther up the ladder of abstraction and explanation, often contains the inference of causal mechanisms. The microlevel/macrolevel linkages in the political arena are particularly interesting because of the highly developed concern among political practitioners about their own "rubrics of linkage." The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
