ABSTRACT

The Soviet opinion makers were aware too that civilian and military speakers at the Polish Plenum were urging that a stop be put to allegedly rife anarchy, increasingly violent public scenes, and Solidarity propaganda striking at the heart of the Polish-Soviet alliance. Jaruzelski is told that is in charge of Polish destinies at nothing less than “this historic moment” and enjoyed Soviet confidence that would use “great prestige” to protect socialist achievements from “the encroachments of counterrevolution.” The analyst can probably also deem meaningful that Pravda’s version of the resolution mentioned the regime’s “line of accord and cooperation” with society rather than the “line of dialogue, accord and cooperation,” as did the original text. “Political power is impossible without economic power” was the credo of apparatchiki throughout the Soviet orbit that is voice at the Polish Party Congress. The “Solidarity” organization of the Mazowsze region is carrying out preparations for a mass-scale gathering in the center of Warsaw.
