ABSTRACT

It is suggested that there should be a Police Surgeon appointed for every 100,000 persons in the United Kingdom. There is no National or State police force in the United Kingdom and each Metropolitan or County area has its own police force and its own appointed Police Surgeons and Deputies. Those doctors wishing to do clinical/forensic work apply for appointment as Deputy Police Surgeons in their local force. There is a clinical and pathological section of this exam. Most large centers have a Medico-Legal Society, many Police Surgeons are members of the Forensic Society and other kindred and national groups. The Police Surgeon is in receipt of an annual retainer and is paid for items of service on a negotiated scale. Income is derived also from Courts and from Social Service Departments. The standard of evidence produced and the manner in which it is reported and later verbally given to the Court is of the utmost importance.
