ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents a process of reform in teacher education that shows the complexities of teacher education in Latin America. It offers a relevant sample of the current research on Latin American education in comparative perspective. The book also offers an interesting analysis of Argentinean education at the turn and early part of the twentieth century. It discusses the attempt at educational reform in Mexico and its implications for the educational system. The book provides an insightful analysis of Paulo Freire’s early work in Chile, one of the founding moments of popular education in Latin America. It analyzes in detail the problematic of higher education in Argentina which exemplify many of the pressing issues in the region’s higher education system. The concept of subjects refers to the notion of social and pedagogical subjects, and their relationships with knowledge and structures.
