ABSTRACT

Commentators such as Gejerus emphasize that, while God is not subject to emotions of any kind, in the Scriptures he is shown as laughing at the 'insane strivings of evil men'. 1 By such a figure of speech God, who is actually tranquil and impassible, is warning mankind of the consequences of sin. It is for sound reasons of teaching and morality that the Old Testament attributes such human motives and actions to God (the technical name for which is anthropopathy). God is rightly portrayed as 'laughing' sinners 'to scorn'; his 'laughter' teaches a salutary lesson.
