ABSTRACT

The rush of events during 1993 in the international trading system, most notably the inauguration of the EU's single market and final approval of North American Free Trade Agreement and the Uruguay Round agreement, might well have been followed by a period of consolidation in global trade relations. Issues grouped under the rubric of domestic competition policy constitute a third candidate for prominent additions in the medium term to the US trade policy agenda. A look into the future suggests that immediate additions to the US trade agenda will consist of efforts to flesh out the Uruguay Round agreements covering the new areas of services, intellectual property rights, and trade-related investment measures. Several emerging issues on the US trade policy agenda exemplify the broadening definition of foreign trade relations. Issues grouped under the rubric of domestic competition policy constitute a third candidate for prominent additions in the medium term to the US trade policy agenda.
