ABSTRACT

The Citizens' Committee under the Solidarity chief was established on December 18, 1988. It gathered the Polish anti-Communist elite from all levels—intellectuals, scholars, writers, lawyers, actors, and opposition activists. The intention of its creators, people who had for a long time formed the democratic opposition to the regime, mainly in the Workers' Defense Committee organization, was to make it an expression of their own expectations and longings. The committee would make statements and formulate political positions in the face of the Communist regime. Everything was falling into its logical place. This was a carefully laid plan and Lech was its executor. First Lech dismisses Wujec, who was a thorn in Najder's side because as the secretary of the Citizens' Committee he denied Najder, whom Lech Walesa nominated, any real power. For Lech Walesa, Wujec was a symbol of the link between the Citizens' Committee, the Solidarity Left, and the presidium of the Citizens' Parliamentary Caucus.
