ABSTRACT

At the academy, Kai-shek's daily routine began at 5 a.m., when he rose from bed. At 6 a.m. he watched his men at drill. At 7 a.m. he came home to eat with me a plain breakfast of rice, vegetables, and fish. Meat was served only in small quantities. At 8 a.m. he went downstairs to his office on the ground floor, where military officers or important Canton officials came to discuss business. Interviews were strictly scheduled to last only twenty to thirty minutes. Intimate friends came to our private rooms on the first floor. Since he was now much occupied, I took charge of Kai-shek's mail and from it made a memorandum with details about the purpose of visitors before each interview or what replies were to be given to questions asked. Each morning I gave the list to our boy Ah Shun to place on Kai-shek's desk. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. he gave lectures or made announcements to the cadets.
