ABSTRACT
In their protest against Kai-shek's dictatorial behavior, many of the conservatives became his political opponents. But because he controlled the army, there was nothing for the conservatives to do but acquiesce in his wishes. When he wanted something from them, he usually got it. Below the surface, however, it caused much ill feeling and hatred.
