ABSTRACT

It is often said, Happiness penetrates the soul, but what afterwards gushes forth is springs of tears. This saying proved to be very true where Kai-shek was concerned, for on our return from Ruling the first thing that was handed him was an urgent telegram from Hankow. We had hardly entered our drawing room when Kai-shek tore open the envelope and read it. In disgust he threw it away. Then he banged his head with both his fists, took up a vase from the table and smashed it to smittereens, slumped into an easy chair, bent down his head, and wept bitterly. For an instant I became terrified and pleaded: "Oh, please be calm. What has happened?"
