ABSTRACT

On the fourth day after our marriage, together with our two servant boys, Kai-shek and I took the river steamer Ningshai, bound for Ningpo. Because this was my first trip on a large and modern ship, I was thrilled beyond words. Everything seemed immaculately clean, both in the saloon and in the cabin. The trip itself was uneventful, except that I did notice how jarring and unpleasant were the loud voices of the Ningpo passengers. They monopolized the entire saloon and shouted at the top of their voices when they talked. And they talked incessantly. It was very unpleasant.
