ABSTRACT

On December 1, 1921, Kai-shek and I left Shanghai on the SS President Taft for Hong Kong, en route to Canton. Although only two-and-a-half days' journey, our whole trip was most pleasant and interesting. It was my first experience on board a large foreign ship, and everything impressed me as being very luxurious and modern. Kai-shek felt just as delighted and even agog with excitement, for he loved the great expanse of the ocean. But he was particularly excited because he would soon see the hero he worshiped, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. We spent much time strolling on deck. When tired, we sat on deck chairs and chatted.
