ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes how pressures for change are perceived and reacted upon by farmers in two distinct regions within the European Community (EC): olive growers in the southern region of Spain and dairy farmers in the Netherlands. It is obvious that policies determined in supranational arenas like the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the EC tend to have an influence on the work of European farmers. The chapter deals with the pressures for change that will come to bear on Spanish olive growers and Dutch dairy farmers as a consequence of the decisions about "1992," the completion of the EC's Internal Market, and the GATT. The significant changes which Dutch farmers have experienced since the 1960s highlight the prominent role of intermediate structures in Dutch dairy farming, a role completely different from the one in Spain.
