ABSTRACT

Property Crime accounts for 90 percent of the crimes reported to the police as well as the crime victimizations. Criminologists consider robbery and burglary the several most serious property offenses, and subsequently have devoted considerable energy to studying these forms of property crimes. Robbery involves the unlawful taking of property, or attempting to take property from another person by using some type of violent force or the threat of force. Tunnell's research indicates that chronic repeat burglars do so for "quick, easy money" while some do it for the sense of accomplishment, to gain power over someone. Larceny is the "unlawful taking of property from the possession of someone other than one's employer." Shoplifting is the theft of property from a retail store by "customers" and accounts for 25 to 30 percent of all business losses. Motor Vehicle Theft is the "unlawful taking or attempting to take a motor vehicle such as an automobile, van, truck, or motorcycle."
