ABSTRACT

General Assembly endorsed the establishment of an international atomic energy agency to coordinate international nuclear cooperation. India's first landmarks in the field of nuclear energy development were the setting up of the Apsara and CIRUS research reactors at Trombay. India was exporting to the United States thorium nitrate produced in its plants, and was thus cooperating with the United States in a small way in the nuclear field. The United States actively collaborated with India in training the manpower required for the country's sophisticated nuclear energy program. A multipronged approach, covering all aspects of several phases of the nuclear energy program, was developed. The success of a nuclear energy program depends entirely on the success of the base research and development programs encompassing the spectrum of activities from mining to waste disposal. The creation of fabrication facilities for the sophisticated components of a nuclear power station have been successfully established in the country.
