ABSTRACT

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is essentially the offspring of President Eisenhower's speech. It was set up specifically to promote the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The IAEA is essentially a mechanism through which governments interact with the help of an international secretariat. To provide feedback from unusual events with significance for safety, and so to improve safety in nuclear power plants, the IAEA is in the process of setting up an international incident reporting system. The safe disposal of nuclear waste is another area in which the IAEA is active, and governments may have much to gain by international cooperation. One of the major vehicles by which the IAEA meets its statutory mandate to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health, and prosperity throughout the world has been the technical assistance and cooperation program.
