The Norris-LaGuardia Act had given birth to a new category of Persons—unions—and the Wagner Act christened them as members of the civil domain. Business sought protection from civil law and charged unions with being “tortfeasors.” This chapter focuses on the family to the workplace, aims to demonstrate how bringing law into the picture enhances our ability to explain the nature of relationships in an important social arena. In retrospect, the inattention to safety measures in the workplace, the long hours, the lack of benefits, and so on, seems inhumane, but humanity is expensive. Poor working conditions and low wages were accepted by many as the price that had to be paid to make this nation a great industrial power. Although the acquisition of the Knight Company made the American Sugar Refining Company one of the most complete monopolies in the United States, the Supreme Court saw it otherwise.
