ABSTRACT

The particular research problem has to be considered in selecting the best research method. In addition, the social context in which the research is going to be carried out has to be scrutinised to ensure that any potential harm is minimised. Each research process raises its own specific problems. The responsible researcher can therefore be seen as engaging in a quest for Truth through a confusing terrain in which standard guidelines are of dubious benefit. Many researchers across the spectrum of health research find that they have to approach their research task with more diffidence. The danger they face in calling into question the route chosen by Valour-for-Truth is that of being labelled as hobgoblins. Many health researchers therefore travel a different scientific path from Valour-for-Truth. Finally, all researchers, whatever their persuasion or chosen path, should be prepared to debate the way they go about their task without rancour or recrimination.
