ABSTRACT

For many Southerners living through the sit-ins and the freedom rides, or weaned on Amos 'n Andy and Gone with the Wind, little thought was given to one more "colored boy" sent to prison—but Quinton Baker, like the prison camp, was different. Morganton Prison Camp was one of two desegregated prisons operated by the state of North Carolina in 1963. "The chain gang was one of those experiences you say, 'I'm glad I had it; I never want to do it again.' It was there I really learned about the struggle of what it means to be human."
