ABSTRACT
Groups and individuals have asked me to help design rites of passage, often for use with their children, sometimes for themselves. Occasionally, I offer a hand, but more often I decline rather than do battle with the unspoken premises of such requests—for example, that decisions should be made by committee, that training should require only a weekend workshop or two, that start-up costs be kept to a minimum, that the time required be modest, and that I supply an easy-to-read manual.
