ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the international market for durum wheat. Durum is one of several classes of wheat that is used primarily for the manufacture of pasta products and couscous. The chapter also examines how the agricultural policies of Canada, the United States, and the European Community (E.C.) have affected the international durum economy and explores how changes to these policies will affect the durum market in the future. It discusses the dynamics of the international durum industry from a structuralist perspective. The chapter aims to develop a model to determine the structural impacts of key policies. It describes how a General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade agreement, E.C. policy reform, and US policy change would affect the location and level of production, trade, and the price of durum. The chapter also describes a simple model that estimates supply and demand for Canada, the E.C., and the United States.
