ABSTRACT

The main story is the arrival of the second lift on Monday 18 September, and the subsequent attempt by the 4th Parachute Brigade to get into Arnhem. One unit pushed on even further towards Arnhem, to become the first element of the division to take up a permanent position in Oosterbeek. The Airlanding Brigade had the difficult task of defending the landing and dropping zones for the second lift, areas which were up to four miles apart and mostly surrounded by woods through which German troops, thoroughly alerted, could approach and intervene. The second lift was delayed by more than four hours, source of much frustration to the units that had to maintain their positions around the landing areas in the face of increasing German pressure as the day wore on with still no sign of the lift's approach. The fighters flew off and would be back at their bases in Germany, unprepared for action, when the second lift approached.
