The government's abolishment of franco valuta is cited as having provided a boost for the Somali National Movement founded in 1980. The number of educated Somalis was much greater in the late 1980s than in the late 1950s. The 1980s progressed, instances of Somalia using and being used for its geopolitical significance increased, whereas specifically Somali features, such as lineage allegiance and clan-family affiliation, proved not only durable but insistent.
