ABSTRACT

In an event US Attorney General Janet Reno termed historic, Oklahoma tribal leaders and government officials signed a pact Monday to fight Indian child abuse. Reno sent a videotaped message that was to play to 150 people, including leaders from 18 tribes, two US attorneys and scores of tribal, law enforcement, health and social service officials attending a three-day seminar on the topic. She said that a 1993 Indian Health Services report indicated that nationally, there were 32,000 cases of rape and sexual abuse reported on Indian land—4,000 involving children. In Arizona, interdisciplinary teams have been formed to aid Indian child victims. Teams, including law enforcement, counselors and medical and social service workers, are planned for Oklahoma.
