ABSTRACT

In the usual approach to the study of American Indian languages, anthropological linguists obtain their data directly from native speakers of the languages involved. The linguistic work began as an association between a linguist and a native Hualapai speaker. This chapter describes the importance of teamwork between local and academic professionals in building and maintaining a successful community-based bilingual/bicultural education project. Such programs require that local professionals provide academic professionals with continuous training so they may become integrated into the local community, while academic professionals commit themselves to educating local professionals in research techniques. The chapter argues that the kind of teamwork embodied in Hualapai Bilingual/Bicultural Education Program (HBBEP) is the best way to implement an enduring and successful program. It discusses some of the major factors that have contributed to HBBEP's success. HBBEP not only permits, but requires, an active involvement of parents in the educational process.
